The DJI Neo 4K is a petite drone that weighs in at a miniscule 135 grams, or just under 5 ounces. That means this quadcopter doesn’t have to be registered with the FAA. It’s so light that even if you use the heavier extended battery, you’re still under the 249 gram cutoff. If you do want to register anyway, it’s only $5 and remains valid for 3 years.
The Neo measures 5″ x 6″ x 2″ and packs away easily because of its compact size. It’s designed to be used outdoors and is rated to withstand up to Level 4 winds (13-18mph), although it’s good practice to take it out in slightly less powerful winds as a safety buffer. Brushless motors allow the Mini 4K to travel at a zippy horizontal top speed of up to 35mph.
If you buy the Neo by itself, you’ll control it using your smartphone app. The range is restricted to 30m (150 feet). If you get either of the Fly More Combos, you’ll get a remote that boosts the horizontal range up to 10,000km (4,000m vertical) under ideal conditions. Real world range is much lower because you really want to maintain line of sight at all times since the remote uses OcuSync technology. The stock battery will give you up to 18 minutes of runtime.
Because this is a camera designed for beginners, it has intelligent features to assist you in piloting the drone properly. Automated functions include one-tap takeoff and landing, GPS Return to Base (RTB), and stable hovering. The rotors have integrated propeller guards so you don’t have to worry about chipped blades every time you screw up a landing. The built-in 4K camera records directly onto the 22GB onboard storage (there’s no option to expand the capacity with memory cards) and has built-in electronic image stabilization instead of a gimbal like the higher-end models. Framing and composing your shot is straightforward with an array of preset video techniques like Helix, Dronie, Rocket, and Boomerang.
There are three bundles you can choose from. For $199 you can get three additional batteries and the charger. This is an outstanding value because it’s only $60 more than the drone itself and OEM batteries are not cheap. For $245, the Fly More combo gets you two extra batteries and the DJI RC-N3 remote. Finally, for $369, the Motion Fly More combo swaps out the remote with the DJI goggles and RC Motion 3 controller for a super immersive control experience.
