Sony is returning with not just one, but two State of Play streams on September 3rd at 6am PT / 9am ET / 3:00pm CEST / 10:00pm JST, so get ready for a whole host of new PS5 game announcements, fresh looks at gameplay, and maybe even some other surprises. So far, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is the only game we know will be shown, with an extended look at its vast world teased, but other “updates and announcements from PlayStation Studios and third-party partners” are promised. So, what could we see?
Well, we’ve got double the chance to see things this year, with a second showcase to follow directly after, focusing on studios from Japan and Asia. For context, last year’s equivalent stream gave us a gameplay trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine that included a release window reveal, a release date for Housemarque’s Saros, and a first look at Battlefield 6’s campaign. But what can we expect to see this year? Well, let’s get stuck in and look at exactly that.
PlayStation Studios and Exclusives
Marvel’s Wolverine could make one final State of Play appearance ahead of its imminent September 15 release. Excitement levels are already high for this one, but I guess one more trailer or sneak peek can’t hurt.
Revealed at PlayStation’s June State of Play, God of War Laufey, is scheduled to arrive in February of 2027, which is creeping up on us quickly. So far, we’ve only seen that extended gameplay slice that came alongside its unveiling, so another look at it would be more than welcome. There are many directions that a potential trailer could take us, whether it be a deeper dive into the story, world, and characters we’ll meet on Faye’s journey, or a showcase of how differently she’ll perform in combat compared to her husband, Kratos. Either way, we can’t wait to see more.
Is it finally time for Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet to reemerge? It’s been over 18 months since the reveal of Naughty Dog’s latest, with that one trailer still our only glimpse of it. Some gameplay would be lovely, and if we’re dreaming, some sort of release date window would be very much appreciated, too. This week, we got the news that the shooting of its performance capture has been completed, alongside a social post from the studio that read “Cannot wait to show you their incredible work when the time is right!” Could that time be Thursday?
Housemarque only recently gave us Saros in April, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t be seeing it here. After all, the studio’s previous game, Returnal, gave us a fair amount of post-launch additions, including co-op play and the endless Tower of Sisyphus mode. Could we see something similar come to Saros? The Finnish studio has already been in the news this week, following the departure of co-founder Ilari Kuittinen, who had been with the company for 31 years. One PlayStation Studios game we can probably expect to see DLC for is Ghost of Yotei, whose Echoes of Sekigahara story expansion drops alongside a new roguelike mode on October 1.
It feels a little too early to see what the third part of Guerrilla Games’ Horizon trilogy is, with reports suggesting it’s still many years away. And it seems as if we’ll be waiting a while to see anything from that universe, as Horizon: Hunter’s Gathering has reportedly been rebooted internally due to negative feedback from playtests. Could we ever see this live-service multiplayer spin-off again? With Halloween looming on the horizon, though, perhaps it’s time to get another look at what Until Dawn 2 may have in store for us.
As for other PlayStation studios, we still don’t know what a lot of them are working on. It’s fair to assume Polyphony is developing another Gran Turismo, and with it being over four years since the last, could we see Gran Turismo 8 pop up on the 3rd? 2027 marks 30 years for the series, so it seems like a nice time for another dose of sim-racing action if you ask me. It’s also been a long time since we’ve heard from LittleBigPlanet and Dreams creators Media Molecule, Days Gone developers Bend, and whatever is happening with Haven’s Fairgames — could it be rebranding to Break In? We’ll take hearing from any of these studios as a win.
And then there are the PS5 exclusives that are being made outside of Sony’s first-party structure, such as Phantom Blade Zero. The S-Game-developed action game looks more impressive each and every time we see new gameplay, and we certainly wouldn’t say no to another peek here, despite it receiving its own dedicated State of Play just a couple of weeks ago. Set for an October 28 release, it certainly makes sense for it to show up in some capacity during one of the two streams.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls has been received well — on console at least — following its recent August 6 release, so could developer Arc System Works be looking to keep that momentum going with a look at who will be joining the roster next? Dataminers uncovered five possible DLC characters a few weeks back, so could we see one of them pop up here?
Another PS5 exclusive, 4:Loop, staged a beta earlier in the year, suggesting that maybe it isn’t a million miles away from a release date either. The co-op shooter from JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot Studios, directed by Left4Dead’s Mike Booth, will be looking to turn around Sony’s multiplayer woes.
Third-Party and Multi-Platform
I’m by no means guaranteeing anything, but there is a tiny chance we’ll actually see GTA 6 at the first of the two State of Plays. Following its expansive extended look last week, a small follow-up here wouldn’t be beyond the realm of belief. Perhaps a look at how Rockstar’s latest will perform on PS5 Pro?
What we do know, is that part three of Square Enix’s FF7 remake project, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will end the first of the two showcases, with an extended look into its world promised. Speaking of Square…could we get a visit from Sora, Mickey, and friends as Kingdom Hearts 4 continues to steadily reveal what will be in store for the action RPG?
Revealed in February, Saber Interactive’s John Wick game was certainly a surprise. Some gameplay of this Keanu Reeves-starring prequel to the movies would be a treat. At the same State of Play, Konami’s first mainline Castlevania game in 17 years was announced, with Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse returning to its 2D action roots. With a long PlayStation lineage tied to the series, we wouldn’t be shocked to see it again. Two other games set to come out soon are Control Resonant and Star Wars: Galactic Racer, and could make a reappearance.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is a remake of the original Lara Croft adventure, and, seeing as how important that game was for the original PlayStation, a State of Play would be a logical place for more of it to be shown off. Another series tied to Sony history is Resident Evil. Could it be time for another look at Resident Evil: Veronica?
As if two Marvel games weren’t enough, there’s also a chance we’ll see Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, which has been indefinitely delayed “beyond early 2026.” If this really is Captain America and Black Panther in an Uncharted-like action-adventure from Amy Hennig, then a look at gameplay would be much welcomed. And then there’s Project Windless, a new action-adventure game starring a sword-wielding seven-foot chicken from PUBG publishers, Krafton. Now isn’t the time for me to fully go into details of the nightmares I used to have as a child about being chased by a giant chicken man, but I won’t lie to you, I’m both excited for and terrified of this game in equal measure.
So, that’s everything to expect from September 3rd’s two State of Play streams. There will, we hope, be plenty of surprises, though. What game are you most excited to see more of? Let us know in the comments below.
